Park(ing) Day 2007

 | by your friend

All over NYC today parking spaces are being converted into mini parks, cafes and campgrounds as part of a nationwide effort by The Trust for Public Land to give our cities back to the people who live in them.

In NYC our sidewalks are overflowing and cars clog the streets. Consider this: a 250 square foot parking space can hold about 45 standing people, 20 bikes, one tree and bench, or an SUV.

Pioneer in experimental green living, Colin Beaven (The No Impact Man), is living for one year in his Park Ave apartment without producing any waste or using public transit of any kind, elevators included. For Park(ing) Day you can find Colin camped out in front of the Whole Foods on 7th and 24th.

Check out videos of last year’s Park(ing) Day in San Francisco and Park Slope.
