On Friday, June 8th, thehappycorp vacated the office to celebrate the first annual
Ben Nabors Day. In honor of Ben's 2 year anniversary at thehappycorp he planned a very special field trip to the Edge of the World (some people call it Far Rockaway).
Using the buddy system and a series of whistles to stay in constant communication, thehappycorp hit up MoMA first thing in the morning to see the
Richard Serra sculpture exhibit. Ben Nabors did his best to keep us in line, but being lost in giant metal mazes makes us giddy and we may have touched the art once or twice.
In the afternoon it was the Q35 bus to Far Rockaway to play golf in the rolling fog. The proximity of the sea and the deserted grounds made it seem like we were on the links at the Edge of the World. We won't get into scores, but with the humidity Ben's hair could have been on a team of its own.
Starved, we called the Seaside car company and headed to Totonnos on Neptune Ave. for pizza; those of us not sated continued to feast on cheese fries at Nathan's before hitting the Cyclone and the mostly broken hell of Dante's Inferno before they’re gone for good. Nothing made us feel so strong and alive, however, as Steer Wrestling. Trying to touch those horns together made us feel like cowboy druids.
Finally, (and we have no shame saying this) how could a day at Coney Island be complete without a few games of
Shoot the Freak, yard-long pina coladas made with grain alcohol, Dance Dance Revolution, and a trip to the freak show to see
Chuy the Mexican Wolf Man.
Guess what didn’t happen? Making it home in time for supper. Ben Nabors Day to the Maxx became Ben Nabors night. We let the grease settle in our bellies and the evening breeze sooth our sunburns
All hail Ben Nabors Day. May we live to see number 2.
